AboutAs one of the oldest and largest design associations, Industrial Design Society of America is a national non profit organization promoting the practice and growth of design through information, education, community, and advocacy. Here at the University of Michigan chapter, we are a student run organization made up of passionate undergraduate designers looking to learn, explore, teach and promote the practice of design through workshops, company visits and competitions. We believe that great design comes from a holistic and collaborative approach, our leadership team looks to create an environment where a variety of design fields are represented to give everyone the opportunity to learn and explore.

What is Industrial Design?
Great question! Industrial design is the professional practice of designing products used by millions of people around the world every day. Industrial designers not only focus on the appearance of a product, but also on how it functions, is manufactured and ultimately the value and experience it provides for users. Industrial designers are responsible for designing everything from cars and toasters to smart phones and life-saving medical equipment. The breadth of work and social impact created at the hands of industrial designers across the world is truly amazing. Every product you have in your home and interact with is the result of a design process and thousands of decisions aimed at improving your life through design.
